Long before Fellini transitioned into the surreal and dreamlike, he was a master of neo-realism.  La Strada is a masterpiece of the genre, although a little more theatrically dramatic than most neo-realist works.  

The teaming of Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina resulted in one of the tragic duos in screen history.  Quinn plays a strong man who "purchases" Masina and brings her along with him as he travels from town to town, performing.  

I certainly won't argue with anyone who says this is Fellini's greatest film.
